LG 55" OLED TV

by Abe Abrahamian---12-28-11

LG announced that they will show the world's largest OLED television at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) in Las Vegas. A 55" OLED panel will be on display for all to see. This new technology will provide uniform color and the highest true contrast ratio over any LED LCD set on the market today. First to market was Sony with a small 7.4" up to a 24" set. However, the technology was not perfected. One of the initial drawbacks of OLED was 'fading'. The image would tend to get dark by 50% within 24 months.

LG claims that this issue has been resolved. This new TV set will feature up to 100,000:1 contrast ratio and a wider color gamut than traditional LED LCD sets. The total panel depth will be approximately 5mm! OLED technology works by allowing the Liquid Emitting Diodes (LED) to self generate light. One of the most exciting features of this new technology is it does not work with a traditional back light, this will allow television manufacturers to design super thin television sets. Also, the technology will be available in "flexible" format. This will be the fundamental basis of bendable digital paper and televisions in the future.
